4 ways to get your circulation going

Who doesn’t know it? You get up in the morning and your circulation goes crazy. You stagger into the bathroom, make an effort to get ready, and even at work the circulation is not yet at full speed. Such circulation problems, especially in the morning, affect many of us.

A common cause of circulatory issues is a low blood pressure and this can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, weakness and nausea. In this blog post we give you 4 tips on how to strengthen your circulation. Exercise, hot and cold showers, acupuncture or a healthier diet can help. The organic breakfast products from Verival can of course contribute to a healthier diet.

What does circulation actually do in our body?

The task of the blood circulation is to supply all cells of our body with nutrients and oxygen. There are two major types of blood vessels – arteries flow away from the heart and veins flow back to the heart. The most important blood vessel is the so-called aorta. The total length of all blood vessels of a human being is about 100,000 km. The blood circulation is divided into the systemic circulation and the pulmonary circulation.

What are possible causes for circulatory problems?

Circulatory problems can often arise due to low blood pressure. This worsens the blood flow to the brain and it is not supplied with enough oxygen.

There are various causes for low blood pressure, which we will now explain to you: 

  1. Lack of exercise – The most common cause for low blood pressure is that we are all sitting too much. If you sit all day, you demand too little from your cardiovascular system. This slows down its reaction in stress situations. If you then stand up abruptly, your circulation is “too slow” and temporarily overwhelmed.

  2. Unhealthy diet, smoking and alcohol – Various other health-damaging behaviours can also lead to low blood pressure. These include smoking, alcohol, drugs, an unhealthy diet, large meals, obesity, stress or other mental health issues.

  3. Weather fluctuations – People who react strongly to the weather also often suffer from poor circulation. This is particularly noticeable during temperature fluctuations in spring or autumn or even on very hot days in summer. Weather-sensitive people suffer especially at these times.

  4. Getting up too fast – Jumping out of bed in the morning doesn’t make it easy for your body to adjust. Orthostatic hypotension describes the low blood pressure caused by getting up too quickly. When you get up from lying down, the blood flows briefly into the legs before it can be pumped up again.

  5. Standing for a long time – Standing for longer periods can also lead to low blood pressure.

  6. Overloading during sports – Not only too little exercise but also too much of sports can lead to imbalances in your circulation.

  7. Medication – Various medications, for example medication for depression or high blood pressure, also have an influence on blood pressure.

  8. Illnesses – Finally, circulatory problems can of course also be caused by diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypothyroidism or varicose veins.

What symptoms do circulatory problems cause?

We already know that low blood pressure means that the brain is not supplied with enough oxygen. But what symptoms can you get when you have circulatory problems? Circulatory problems describe all complaints related to the circulation and heart, including dizziness, weakness, fatigue, general loss of consciousness and sweating. Problems, such as flickering of the eyes or even fainting, occur suddenly. Circulatory weakness can also lead to shivering, cold hands and feet and a pale skin colour.

How can I strengthen my circulation?

  1. Exercise – The very best remedy for circulatory problems is exercise. Too little exercise is also one of the most common causes. Physical activity boosts the metabolism and circulation. It is best to simply integrate movement into everyday life. Already in the morning it is worthwhile to start the day actively with some exercises in bed. Those who do yoga before work, cycle to work or take the stairs instead of the escalator are rewarded with a strengthened circulation.

    Also, at work we advise you to stay active. For example, visit your colleagues at the office instead of writing to them, get the coffee from the kitchen and, if possible, get a height-adjustable desk. Ergonomic office chairs are also better as the support your body position. 

    The most important thing for the circulation is to exercise from time to time. We especially recommend exercise outside. When doing sports and exercise in general, you should of course not do it too intensively and allow your body to take the breaks it needs. Of course, training in the fresh air is a challenge, especially in winter. Here you will find tips on how to prepared optimally when doing sports during the cold season.

    Endurance sports, such as running or swimming, and sports that improve the ability to react, such as tennis, are particularly helpful against circulatory problems. Yoga and other relaxation exercises also have a stabilizing effect.

    Of course, it is important to mention that you should start the day actively but avoid jumping up at the first sound your alarm clock makes. Instead, it makes sense to sit up slowly, stretch or sit down at the edge of the bed for a moment.

  2. Contrast shower – Just like a muscle you also have to train your circulation. It helps to alternate between hot and cold showers. If you take a warm shower, the blood vessels widen, if you take a cold shower, they get smaller. A contrast shower in the morning can work wonders for circulatory problems. If you do not want to do that, hot and cold foot baths also help. Sauna visits also stimulate the circulation.

  3. Nutrition – The circulation can also be supported by the right nutrition. First of all, it is important to drink a lot, preferably water or tea, no lemonades or sugared drinks. You should also make sure to drink 2-3 litres per day. If you drink more, your blood pressure should rise. One should also make sure to have a healthy breakfast every day, because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is so to speak compulsory for a balanced and healthy diet.     Another miracle cure for circulatory problems is salt. Salt binds fluids in the body and thus increases blood pressure. A salted breakfast can therefore also help against circulation problems in the morning.

    Alcohol and other addictive substances should of course be avoided. The circulation is also strengthened by having smaller meals. Coffee is also not recommended, because although the circulation is stimulated for a short time, it then drops even further afterwards – this also applies to energy drinks or sparkling wine.

  4. Acupressure – Acupressure, or acupuncture massage, is a process in which pressure is applied to various parts of the body with thumbs, elbows, the ball of the hand or other tools. These body parts are called meridians and on them flows our life energy, the Qi/Chi. This releases energy and boosts our self-healing powers.

Now we would like to give you some tips that you can use if you have acute circulatory problems and want to get them under control again quickly. In order not to fall over during dizzy spells, the first thing we advise you to do is lie down and put your legs up. This solves acute circulatory problems well because the blood can flow back to the heart faster.

Since a circulatory weakness is often related to a lack of fluids, it is also recommended to drink a lot. As described above it also helps to eat something salty. The last tip is a cold stimulus, for example with cold water or a cold washcloth.

Unfortunately, circulatory problems can also be caused by more serious diseases. For this reason, we recommend that you consult a doctor if you have long-term circulatory problems.
