The history of the Bircher muesli
To what genius do we owe this grandiose invention? The inventor of Bircher Muesli was a Swiss doctor named Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner. It was from him that the famous muesli got its wonderful sounding name!
Bircher-Benner was served the muesli by a dairymaid in the Swiss Alps at the time. The raw food meal at that time consisted only of soaked oat flakes, grated apples, grated nuts, a little lemon juice and a little condensed milk.
He refined the muesli and served it to his patients as a healthy apple diet. This resulted in the Bircher muesli, also known as Birchermues in Swiss German, which is known all over the world today.
How healthy is the Bircher Muesli?
The healthy Bircher Muesli contains vitamins without end. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" Dr. Bircher Benner already knew that. That's probably why he made the apple a main ingredient in his Bircher Muesli recipe.
By the way, an average apple contains over 30 vitamins and trace elements, 100 to 180 milligrams of potassium and many other valuable minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, magnesium or iron. Pretty impressive, isn't it?
