We have talked about milk and especially plant-based drinks on our blog several times before. Learn for example how to make plant-based drinks yourself or how sustainable plant-based drinks really are.
Anyone who nowadays does not want to consume milk or cannot tolerate it can fall back on numerous alternatives. There are for example soy drink, various nut drinks such as almond milk or hazelnut milk and last but not least drinks based on grain such as oat drink.
Today we will introduce you to the different types of yoghurt. For example, there are the Greek yoghurt and natural yoghurt. But there are also many alternatives to yoghurt made from cow’s milk or other animal milk. Vegan varieties are based on soy or coconut, for example. One thing is for sure: they can all be combined perfectly with our mueslis and crunchies.
Simple and delicious – the natural yoghurt
First and foremost, we want to clarify what yoghurt actually is and how it is produced. The process of producing yoghurt is called fermentation. Lactic acid bacteria are used, which are added to the milk. The bacteria convert the milk sugar (lactose) into lactic acid (lactate). The ph-value drops, causing the protein to coagulate and yoghurt to be produced.
Natural yoghurt refers to yoghurt to which no sugar or fruit has been added. It has a sour taste. In general, it can be said that natural yoghurt is a healthy food that contains a lot of good calcium.
Yoghurts come in various forms, including yoghurt made from skimmed milk, low-fat yoghurt, regular yoghurt, cream yoghurt and Greek yoghurt, which we will be looking at in more detail shortly. Generally speaking, the creamier the yoghurt, the higher the fat content of the product. Fruits and other flavours such as chocolate, nut or vanilla are often added to natural yoghurt.
Greek yogurt is booming!
Everyone knows it, the Greek yoghurt – but why is it so popular at the moment and what distinguishes it from “normal” yoghurt?
Greek yoghurt has a particularly creamy consistency, which distinguishes it from regular yoghurt, which is normally rather liquid. It also tastes more intense.
In order to produce Greek yoghurt, just as with normal yoghurt, milk is used. However, a significantly higher quantity is required. This is because the water as well as the whey is drained off and only the really creamy components remain. This gives it its viscous consistency.
Due to this production process, Greek yoghurt is richer in protein and contains less carbohydrates than regular yoghurts. This is why especially athletes like to choose this alternative. However, it also has a higher fat content, namely almost 10 percent.Greek yoghurt can be enjoyed sweet as well as savoury. As breakfast or a sweet snack in between, it can be combined perfectly with honey or fresh fruit. Greek yoghurt is also perfect for sauces and soups, salads or casseroles. It tastes especially good with our delicious Verival Crunchies as a topping.
Vegan yoghurt as an alternative
Nowadays, there are many plant-based alternatives to the regular yoghurts made from milk. We want to introduce 4 of them in this blog post:
- Coconut yoghurt
- Almond yoghurt
- Cashew yoghurt
- Soy yoghurt
The coconut yoghurt is particularly filling and nutritious. It has a rather high fat content and also contains a lot of calcium. This calcium can be better absorbed than that in cow’s milk and is important for teeth and bones. Vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin B12 are also contained in coconut yoghurt, which is also particularly good in desserts.
Almonds with their sweetish mild taste are popular among many people. They contain many important nutrients and are also a wonderful source of high-quality unsaturated fatty acids. In addition, almonds are a good source of dietary fibre that supports your digestion. You can also find important vitamins and mineralsin almonds. Almond yoghurt is a creamy alternative to normal yoghurts. It is particularly mild in taste and goes exceptionally well with muesli.
No wonder cashews are so popular, not only do they taste great, but they are also a real brain food. Cashews are very healthy due to the large number of minerals and vitamins and can also make you happy. So why not just try cashew yogurt? A super creamy alternative with a nutty taste.
Soy yoghurt is produced in the same way as normal yoghurt by adding lactic acid bacteria to the soy milk. This causes the soy milk to coagulate and the yoghurt with its sour taste is produced. Just like the other plant-based yoghurt alternatives, soy yoghurt does not contain any animal products and can therefore be enjoyed by vegans.
Try the delicious Yoghurt Granola Bowl
Recently we have launched our Cocoa-Sour Cherry Granola. The chocolate crunchy muesli with sour cherries and cocoa is fully organic, vegan, wholegrain and without palm oil. And even more important: it can be ideally combined with yoghurt.
Here you can find a recipe for the delicious Yoghurt Granola Bowl, for which you can use Greek yoghurt, natural yoghurt, but also plant-based alternatives:
Recipe: Yoghurt Granola Bowl
- 150 g yoghurt or vegan alternative
- 30 g Cocoa-Sour Cherry Granola
- 300 g fruit of your choice (e.g. strawberries or cherries)
- tbsp cocoa nibs
- First put the yoghurt in a bowl and stir it until it is creamy.
- Next, puree about 200 g of fruit with a blender. We took cherries here to go with the granola.
- Then pour the puréed fruit onto the yoghurt.
- Next, put the granola and cocoa nibs on your yogurt bowl.
- Finally, put some fresh fruit on your Yogurt Granola Bowl.
