Muesli Trends 2019

Muesli is a genuine breakfast classic since 1900, when the doctor Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner developed the “Birchermues”, which we today know under the name Bircher Muesli. Even though muesli has already been known and loved for a long time, there are still many different trends and new interpretations in 2019. In today’s blog post we would like to introduce you to the eight most important muesli trends of the year.

1. Grain free

In recent years more and more people have consciously decided to cut out grains from their diet. This is often due to the fact that many grains contain gluten, which can be difficult to digest if you are gluten sensitive or have celiac disease. For example, cereals such as wheat, spelt, rye and oats contain gluten. These grains are often found in muesli. In 2019, more and more people avoid grains in their breakfast bowls. Our Grain Free Sport Muesli is therefore a good alternative for everyone who wants to start the day with a healthy breakfast without grains.

2. Make your own plant-based milk for muesli

Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in 2019. Zero-waste and low-waste trends aimed at reducing or completely eliminating packaging waste are therefore also getting increasingly popular. If you want to make your breakfast muesli more sustainable, you could replace cow’s milk with a homemade plant-based alternative. For example, you can easily make almond milk with a mixer by mixing about 2 spoons of almond butter with 2 dates and about 500ml of water. After mixing, pour the milk through a fine sieve to filter out any pieces. Just try having your favourite muesli with your homemade vegetable milk and you will see how easy it really is!

3. Make muesli bars yourself

As a to-go possibility muesli can also be easily and quickly transformed into delicious muesli bars. They are a perfect snack option for on the go and can be prepared for the upcoming week at the weekend. Here you can find a recipe for homemade muesli bars with the Verival Coconut-Apricot Muesli.

4. Muesli muffins

Like muesli bars, muesli muffins are also a good breakfast or snack option that you can prepare beforehand. A recipe for healthy muesli muffins for a guilt-free treat can be found here.

5. Muesli fondue

The delicious muesli fondue shows that muesli is not only ideal for breakfast but can also be perfectly used for desserts. Arrange your favourite cereals in different bowls and cut some fruit of your choice into small pieces. You can also prepare dips of your choice such as natural yogurt, greek yogurt with honey, nut butter or melted chocolate.
With a fondue fork or a wooden skewer you can then dip the fruit into the different sauces and refine them with muesli.

6. Hempseeds as muesli topping

Hempseeds have especially gained popularity in the last year and these small, healthy seeds can also be easily integrated into your muesli. They are characterized by their high protein content of up to 25 percent. In addition, hempseeds have a high content of various nutrients such as vitamin E, B1, B2, B6, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. The amino acids contained in hempseeds also help to detoxify the body. We find this healthy trend really delicious and therefore you find hempseeds in our Good Morning Organic Seed Mix and our Sport Muesli Strawberry-Sour Cherry.

7. No added sugar

Reducing sugar has many health benefits and is therefore becoming increasingly important. To have a healthy start in the morning, you can try to have muesli without any added sugars. That’s not difficult at all with our Verival mueslis, as almost every muesli in our range has no added sugar.

8. Back to the roots: Heritage grains

In the year 2019, heritage grains are really in trend and are celebrated as an innovation! Strange, in fact, when you consider that these grains are over ten thousand years old. Heritage grains are considered as the predecessors of our modern hybrid varieties and have been preserved in their original form with a low gluten amount. The slightly nutty taste has also caught the attention of trendy chefs as well as nutrition-conscious consumers. Heritage grains can be easily integrated into your breakfast with the Verival Heritage grain mueslis.
